TONGI residence

The home is a two-story bungalow designed on a farmland abundant of crops and vegetation with a self-sustaining environment. The cottage containing slanted roofs and deep verandahs, which are reminiscent of old-style bungalows, while the anglo-asian architecture evident in its slight rural influences backed by intricate carvings is a place of rejuvenation to de-stress from the daily occasions of life. This farmhouse takes up only a small area of land surrounded by nature, accompanied by ponds, flora, fauna, and ample greenery.

The route to the house is designed to allow the user immerse with the humble surroundings and native air while walking to the main entry of the complex. Drawing inspiration from rural sensibilities, the kitchen and staff area is quartered and detached from the main block, while guest and living areas are comprised in the ground level and private bedrooms and lounging verandahs in the upper floor. The high-pitched roofs and spacious patios of the complex are designed for enjoying all seasons of the Bengal climate monsoon without stepping outdoors. Earthen materials such as brick, handcrafted floor tiles and clay talis were used to suit the growing landscape with a crude color pallet representing various natural elements incorporated into the design. Intricately detailed decors along with the door and windows were hand made by the local craftsman through a rigorous process of experimentation and improvisation.

Sloped roofs built of metal purlins and rafters resting on a composite framework of RCC columns and metal beams. Every corner is elaborately detailed to satisfy the anglo-asian theme of the farmhouse, with instances to enjoy the tropical monsoon atmosphere, either lounging by the pond on the elevated wooden deck or a quiet moment on the shaded verandah, intentionally crafted to progress over time, reflecting the evolving beauty of its surroundings.
