Belonging to one of the upscale areas in the city, the projects rests in a quiet neighborhood of Queens, New York, in the midst of a robust historic settlement. The area is home to blocks of sparsely placed private residences enriched with ample greenery woven into an organic urban patchwork.
The building incorporates a modern design expression with a simple solid geometry in contrast to the surrounding traditional houses. This two-storied residence was heavily influenced by the site’s climatic conditions and existing built environment harboring valued spaces adored inside out.
Connecting spaces through horizontal linkages, the two separate forms utilize the length of the site capturing the sunlight predominantly from southwest and northeast through the spacious central courtyards. A common steel staircase connecting the foyer and spacious living areas allows an uninterrupted ascent to the roof while unfolding the interconnected permeability of the floors within. All bedrooms clad with walls facing two widths of the site overlooks the large open areas on both ends with a welcoming entry and a gentle undulating landscape that holds the ground as one whole level guiding the user all the way from the entrance to the floor spaces, while also merging with the semi basement areas. The cellar floor comprising a lounge corner with connection to the ground floor, opens onto a sunken courtyard that encourages seamless interaction across both levels.
As the black sidings are thoughtfully implemented to blend with the regional architectural styles, encased by the modern steel framework, subtle applications of unique décor elements to rustic furniture articulates the artistic expressions of the client’s thoughts and values hinged to the design’s unique identity. The sporadic brilliant pops of colors make up for the subdued hues and crude tinges of the earthy materials inside mimicking the spontaneity of the nature’s maturity with age.
